Today I’m going to talk a little bit about the benefits or the value in setting and sticking to a routine. Now, right off the bat, I know that this isn’t for everyone.
I have a 16 year old son who doesn’t do the same thing the same way ever. But for me, it does come naturally. I’m somewhat of a structured, regimented person, and although I have my times of spontaneity, I pretty much stick to a routine around a lot of things. And the benefits of those routines, in my eyes, start with a level of comfort. I know what’s next.
I travel 45 to 48 weeks out of the year, so I travel a lot. And due to that much travel, I pack and get ready for a trip the same way. I have a routine. And I know that if I follow that routine 99% of the time, I’ll have what I need. So that’s that level of comfort.
I also know the second benefit of that routine is I know what to expect. And so I come prepared. Very rarely in my 30 years of traveling have I had to run to a store to pick up a belt, pair of socks, a tie. Now it happens, but very rarely. And if it happens, it’s usually because somewhere along that routine, I got flustered. I had a shoulder tap and had to leave. Something happened.
So it provides me a level of comfort, but it also provides me a level of preparedness. I know what’s coming next, and so I’m going to prepare for what’s coming next. Another benefit it provides is it allows others to know what to expect from you. If you make phone calls every morning from your office between eight and ten, that’s when people will communicate with you.
They should be expecting your phone call because that’s your routine. So a level of comfort. It shows preparedness and allows others to be ready for you as well. Just a few of the small benefits of sticking to a routine. I’d love to hear some of yours.
